What Dreams May Come?

The idea to make a collection of images of beds in which great artists, writers and thinkers have slept took root in Frederico Garcia Lorca’s house in Granada. There, in a charming, light filled room, was the table he would write at. But there also was the bed in which he dreamed.

There have been one or two where the dreamer and the bed clearly never met, but most are the real thing and all of those here are in that category, even if someone at Robert Burn’s house in Alloway, Scotland, told me that though the mattress was fake the wooden base was genuine and would have been slept on by the poet. She stripped back the mattress and displayed the woodwork.

The bed in the lead image on this page is, indeed, that used and dreamed in by Virginia Woolf.
